Cavallini Middle School has students in grades The school has a tradition of high academic and behavioral standards while maintaining a child-centered environment. Everyday, the students, teachers, parents and community members work together to reach the goal of developing life-long learners and concerned responsible citizens.
The purpose of the following information is to provide an overview of the Cavallini program beyond the core curriculum. These units may include science, english, social studies, math, language arts, music, art, TV production, computer applications, physical education and technology education.
Grade 8 participates in an immigration unit, which culminates in the Ellis Island Simulation. The school has an interscholastic sports program which includes soccer boys and girlswrestling, volleyball, basketball boys and girlssoftball, baseball, cross-country and track.
In addition, there is an intramural program consisting of various tournaments kickball, basketball, etc.
Students also participate in the annual Cavallini Run, covering a one-mile course. The newly created Wellness Center allows students to develop their current fitness, as well as their life-long personal health skills.
Cavallini often partners with our local Youth Guidance Council, which supports many anti-drug and healthy self-esteem programs. Grade 8 students participate in the International Banquet as part of their immigration unit. Grade 6 French students participate in a Mardi Gras unit. In addition to language skills, French and Spanish students learn about the culture through a study of food, music and art.
There is also a 7th and 8th grade band, jazz ensemble, chorus and a select chorus. Students in grades 6 through 8 participate in band concerts and festivals throughout the year.
They, also, perform a concert for the entire student body.
Students in grades 6 through 8 also attend a variety of cultural programs sponsored by the PTO and participate in theater productions. The musical this year will be Peter Pan. There was a district-wide art show that featured works by all 8th grade students.
Creations is published once annually and The Cardinal is published periodically throughout the school year. The school newspaper received a second place award from the American Scholastic Press Association.
Selected students in Grade 8 design a traditional yearbook, which is distributed in June. These students also create a yearbook slideshow, enjoyed by their peers at the conclusion of each school year.
Author David Lubar also performed a workshop for 6th grade students. Parents help chaperone trips, contribute their energies to the school musical and play an active role in the Ellis Island Simulation.
Parent and community groups i. The PTO provided many cultural programs that support the curriculum. However, the school is also supported by a district Curriculum Coordinator, Quad-District Curriculum Coordinator, and a staff developer.
In addition, commendations have been given each year for participation in the Johns Hopkins Talent Search program. Through the Enrichment Program, students who qualify according to Johns Hopkins criteria are identified and invited to take the SAT exam.
Students are also recognized for securing multiple honor roll designations, top tier GPA, exceptional dedication within a discipline, and superior attendance records. The school has recently been recognized for outstanding publications in both Yearbook and Newspaper.
Statisitically, Cavallini is consistently among the highest performing middle schools in New Jersey.
