What is the arche

Mutual relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our journey together. We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need of one another. Our Mission is to: Make known the gifts of people with developmental disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships; Foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, while being faithful to the core values of our founding story; and Engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.

People are drawn to our community from all over the world seeking a different way of life and bringing with them a wide range of beliefs, What is the arche and qualifications.

Inspired by a desire to make a difference with their lives, assistants who come discover a sense of purpose that is born out of the challenge of community life. The orientation and training program for assistants fosters personal growth, competence and lasting friendships.

All persons — with or without intellectual disabilities — have a right to be and feel safe in these settings, free from all forms of abuse and harassment. Many local friends participate in our community life as volunteers.

Other friends, students and visitors attend our worship services or retreats at Dayspring, our spiritual centre. Together we create homes of welcome and celebration, sharing the daily tasks of cooking, cleaning, and shopping: The great discovery for assistants has been that our lives in community have been good not only for them but also for us.

Living in the small French village of Trosly-Breuil, Jean invited two men with intellectual disabilities from a local institution to create home with him. He is recognized as a humanitarian. Today we have grown to include eight homes in Richmond Hill, five vocational programs, and the Dayspring spiritual centre.

We are blessed today with such vibrant and diverse community. We celebrate the spiritual traditions of those who are Christian, Jewish, and Muslim with great respect and appreciation.

We also honour community members who do not identify with a faith tradition. In all that we live at Daybreak, we celebrate our diversity, whether in ability or faith tradition or culture, as these differences weave a beautiful tapestry which reflects our core belief that all people have unique and sacred value.

Over time, our homes have become established in the local neighbourhoods of Richmond Hill, and Daybreak members, both young and old, are very much integrated into the wider community through shopping, dining out, and accessing entertainment and recreational activities.

This requires each person to grow in humility and to work on themselves. It means learning to see each person as somebody in whom God dwells, a person from whom we can receive gifts and who can help us to grow in love. The belief in the inner beauty of each and every human being is at the heart of all true education and at the heart of being human.
